False Start
This penalty is called when a player begins the play before the ball has been snapped. There are
specific rules governing when a player may be in motion and how many players on a team are allowed
to move before the play begins. |
 |
Unsportsmanlike Conduct
Any time a football player acts like Dennis Rodman.
|
 |
Incomplete Pass
This call means a pass was not caught by any receiver. An incomplete pass results in a dead ball.
The same signal is used to announce no score occured. For example the referees who stand beneath
the goal posts on a field goal attempt use this signal if the attempt is no good. |
 |
Start Clock
After a time-out, injury on the field, incomplete pass or other clock stopping event, the referees
may need to denote that the clock should begin (for example if a call is changed and an incomplete
pass is declared a fumble). This signal tells the record keepers to start the game clock running. |
 |
Inelligible Receiver
This call means the receiver was not eligible to catch the ball for some reason. This may mean
the player went out of bounds before catching the ball or violated some other rule. |
 |
Delay of Game
Teams are only allowed a short period of time between plays (unless the clock is stopped).
Otherwise, once one team took the lead they would refuse to play until time ran out. A play clock
runs between plays, and the ball must be snapped before the clock runs to zero. If a team
is responisble for delaying the game they receive a five-yard penalty. |
 |
Clipping
When a player throws his body across the back of an opponent's leg or hits a player from the back
below the waist. |
 |
Roughing the Kicker
The game rules provide the kicker plenty of protection. Almost any contact with the kicker (instead
of the ball) will result in this penalty.
